Building a Clean Energy Nation
Clean, renewable energy and storage are here. Utilities in both Red and Blue states, in places like Indiana and Tennessee, are retiring coal plants and choosing renewables and storage over new gas; simply because it’s cheaper and dependable.
But it can take more than good economics for utilities to shift from fossil fuels to renewables; they need pressure, advocacy and possibly litigation. Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal and Beyond Gas campaigns organize citizens to show up at PUC and PSC meetings, demanding that utilities do real cost comparisons between fossil fuels and clean energy. Western Resource Advocates work with the utilities (in 6 Western States) to educate them on the cheapest and most effective ways to retire dirty energy and bring on renewables, all while saving money for themselves and customers.
Both organizations advocate for cities and states to create 100 percent clean energy policies and goals while allocating funds to support fossil fuel workers to transition to good jobs in other sectors.
Democracy Enhancement and Protection
We need to protect our democracy. Seemingly small things, like removing parking spaces at the polls on campuses, eliminating voters’ names from voter files, and complicated voter ID laws are all ways to suppress the vote. Laws that make voting difficult for Native Americans on reservations are also wrong.
Sustainable Farming: Healthy Soils and Animal Rights
Food grown in healthy soils with pasture raised animals is inextricably intertwined with farm animal rights and reducing climate change. To increase food production without chemical (fossil fuel based) fertilizers and pesticides, soil health is improved with no-till farming and crop rotation. Chickens, goats, sheep and cows are rotated as well, eating bugs and fertilizing the soil. These practices help build carbon in the soil.
Healthy soil is currently the only technology that works at scale to draw down carbon from the atmosphere.
Locally grown food has little or no transportation, refrigeration and processing costs, minimizing its carbon footprint. The food tastes better too!
